Riley was found as a stray on Thanksgiving Day by a woman who decided
to befriend him and take him in. She discovered quickly that he was
blind. She wanted to keep him but her landlord would not allow her to
do so.
Since then, Riley has been in our care. He has been to a specialist,
Dr. Bowersox at the Veterinary Specialty Center. Riley has been
diagnosed with Uveodermatologic Syndrome. US is an immune-mediated
disease where the body inappropriately attacks its own pigment
producing cells. He has very limited vision in his right eye, and none
in his left. Riley did have some inflammation in both eyes but with the
help of antibiotic drops they have cleared up. Dr. Bowersox strongly
believes that Riley can live a long happy life with this condition.
However, he did suggest that his eyes be watched and checked yearly.
Although Riley is blind, he has learned to rely on his other senses. He
doesn’t allow his handicap to hold him back. He’s a quick learner and
it doesn’t take him long to figure out where things are and how to
avoid them.
Riley is housebroken, crate trained and knows several commands. He
would do well in a home by himself, or with other dogs that are the
same size or larger but NO CATS. He has no issue with children. Due to
his limited sight he might be better off with older children than
smaller children. This sweet boy is still looking for a forever home

Shadow, a 6-year old black male cocker spaniel, came to us from a humane society in absolutely horrific condition. He was infested with fleas, scratching like crazy, filthy and covered in matted hair. The poor boy had double cherry eyes and may end up being blind due to neglect, as well as being inflicted with skin allergies, ear infections, and worms. How dogs get to this sad state of affairs is incomprehensible, and how they can still be sweet and happy to be with human beings is testament to the loving hearts and short memories of most of the dogs that we rescue.
Needless to say, Shadow was ecstatic to be out of the kennel. After the initial excitement, he settled down nicely. The vets and their staff loved him, and he is busy being cleaned up and having his medical conditions addressed. He has undergone surgery to fix his eyes, been neutered and vaccinated, and has been dewormed and put on medications for his eyes and ears. He is a happy and friendly boy; although he was a bit nervous at first, once he was with our volunteer for more than a few minutes, he was demanding attention and pets from her. He is energetic and active, so he will be looking for someone to walk and play with him. We are hoping his sight can be renewed, and are planning to take him to a specialist; however, in the event it can’t be repaired, Shadow will need a loving home to help him grow accustomed to his blindness. We have had a number of blind dogs in our rescue, and with time and patience and love, they have grown to be active and happy members of their households. Please give Shadow the second chance he so desperately wants.

LILLIE (aka Sweetie) is a 3 year old blind pure
bred blue tick hound. She was chained due to her disability. Her breeders
thought she deserved a better life with a new family, so we had to
reach out and help her. Her new name says it all! Lillie is the kindest
dog you could ever meet, great with other dogs and thrives on human
attention. Sweetie needs a nice home where she can spread inspiration and
love to her humans. She deserves a good home. A big thanks to West
Virginia rescue for transporting her to freedom.
We will be taking Lillie to an
ophthalmologist to get an official diagnosis for her eye condition. Update:
Per our visit with the
ophthalmologist, most likely Lillie's blindness was due to an infection
that was never treated properly. Her blindness MIGHT or could be
cured with very extensive eye surgery. Lillie is a wonderful dog who
handles her blindness with perfection.
She has been spayed and is UTD on all her vaccinations.

A beautiful but spicey little pom/Chi mix, long haired, Scooter is a real looker.
Yet he can be nice at times, and cuddle and be held in one's arms. Only
for the experienced Chihuahua and/or Pomeranian owner, he has inherited
the worst and the best characterisetics of both breeds. About 6 years
old, all of 8 lbs at most, with long flowing red hair and a winsome
look. Beware, just behold and admire, but don't expect a lap dog. He
does not like cats either, as if he did not have enough problems. A
finicky eater, too, so it won't cost much to keep him around to admire.
He lost an eye in cavorting around his cage, damaging it.

Sam is an older poodle but still very active and alert. He IS creamy
white in color. He has cataracts, and we would hope eventually for
corrective surgery if we can find donors willing to help him.. He is
very sweet and gentle, and very people oriented. He was given up
because of family circumstances, but his family has come to visit him
and groom him, and hope to take him back if he does not find a home. We
worried about diabetes at first, but he's not diabetic, and the
cataracts are genetic and could be removed by surgery, but that's
expensive..Sam has been treated with VECTRA 3D for the prevention of
fleas and ticks

Wookie got his name from the little grumbling and growling sounds he
makes, just like the Wookie in Star Wars. But he's much nicer. Wookie
though does have some things to grumble about. His Mom died, suddenly,
no one in the family wanted him, and he was rescued by, of all things,
cat people. Fortunately for him he got to us eventually. He has lost
his vision, something called Sudden Acute Retinal Degeneration
Syndrome, or SARDS, or so that's what the doggie ophthalmologists
think. Whether the sudden blindness had anything to do with his Mom's
death we'll never know. He's in need of foster, though, Woofmanor, with
five acres for the dogs to roam around in, and large rooms in a
converted barn for dog quarters, are a little too much to expect a
blind little Silky to cope with. He's doing very well, but it would be
so nice if he could have a person to relate to again, in quarters that
are small enough for him to learn his way around. He's very handsome,
very sweet, and with the right person, very active. He was running up
and down the walk at Pet Valu with a teenager running with him. It's
unlikely his sight would ever return, but that's not left him without a
zest for life. He's a great dog who needs his own home and quarters.

Skippy Peke is a 4-yr-old Pekinese, a handsome tan color, who weighs in
at 17 lbs. He's a bit feisty, and lost an eye in an unhappy encounter,
but that doesn't bother him. He's very good with people, he just is not
too friendly with any dog he thinks he can whip, mostly the bigger
dogs...it's called a Napoleon complex, and affects Maltese and Pekes
evidently. So he should probably be the only dog but he may get along
with dogs his own size if they accept him as the boss. He's a really
beautiful creature, in spite of the loss, and much in need of his own
person and his own home

While walking through the overcrowded shelter a little dog caught our
eye ,severely matted , terrified and not sure of what her fate was we
knew we couldn't leave her .So welcome Crystal into FOWA's foster
program. She has special needs but FOWA looked beyond and saw she was a
special girl. She is about 9 years old.She is up to date on
vaccines.Crystal is in the early stage of mild heart failure and has
cataracts. Medication has been started to help with her heart issues..
The medicine cost approximately $45.00 a month for now . Although there
are no promises our vet thinks Crystal can have many good years left .
FOWA wants to believe that somewhere out there is a generous ,loving
family that wants to give her the family that every animal should have.
She is sweet and loving and deserves a home that sees her good ,deals
with her medical needs and loves her endlessly.

Dante
is a sweet 11 month old purebred Siberian Husky. He is mostly white
with a slight hint of light red along his head and back. Dante is a
special boy in many ways but the most important one is that he is
completely blind. Don't tell him that he is different, as he was born
that way and has really refined his other senses to help him cope with
blindness. He leads with his front paws and his nose to feel things
out and locate any obstacles. Dante is a very smart boy and knows sit
and down and he also has great house manners.
Despite
being blind, Dante enjoys acting like a normal dog. He gets along great
with other dogs and loves to run and play with them. He would love a
canine companion who he can learn from and he looks to other dogs and
his humans for guidance.
Dante
loves to be near his humans. It is where he feels the safest and he is
an affection absorber. He will bury his head in your lap or your side
and stay there as long as you let him!
Dante will need a home who is patient and understanding and will give him the love, attention and guidance he needs!

Poor puppy. He went suddenly blind. He is so unhappy. He needs a
special person to help him to learn that the world is still a safe
place for him to be. We took him to the opthamologist and he underwnt
special tests. He has SARDS and we tried but it was too late to save
his site. If you cannot adopt him can you help to sponsor this very

Maude aka Molly needs a home. I took her from a family that was dumping
her at the shelter to be euthanized. They said she could not walk, was
peeing all over the place and was blind. Oh and they lived in a 4th
floor walk-up so it was too hard to carry her (she weighed 38 lbs, now
about 34). She is approximately 15 yrs old It turns out she is
diabetic, which is why she is blind. She does have some arthritis,
which had gotten worse from her lack of activity.
I was able to stabilize her on insulin in about 3 weeks.
She does walk, but is very very slowly. she likes it though. She has a
mammary tumor, whichwill be removed once she is totally stable
She doesn't do much. Would like nothing better than to hang out in a
garden or a deck and sleep in the sun.
She still needs practice going up and down steps but is getting the
hang of it.
Maude is fine with my other dogs.
She does seem to sleep a lot,but I know she is very aware of all that
goes on
I think she is like your old old grandma who seems to be snoozing all
the time and then makes comments like "hang up your jacket" or "don't
put your feet on the furniture!"
I don't know what she is. Spaniel mix. Short with blocky head , red and
black, kind of fluffy. Looks like a stuffed toy
She requires insulin 2x per day.
All she wants is a place to hang, some TLC, and short walks and a
garden. Is that you?

She
is blind and deaf, few are aware of theat at first. She is very
social, easy to walk , Loves people and other dogs... great in the dog
park. She is the best.

Out of the kindness of her heart, Sheila, the woman in Dunkirk, NY who currently has this dog, rescued him from a desperately sad and horrible situation. The original owner was living out of a car, and this poor boy was tied up, all alone, outside of the woman's sister's house. Sheila seems like a very nice woman, but she simply can't afford to keep him forever, as she already has a number of her own pets. He is blind and deaf and he has a seizure disorder (she took him to the vet last week), so he will need to be on Phenobarbitol, which is relatively inexpensive. Spike is a super cute, already neutered, male Boxer around 3-4 years old.
He is completely blind. Poor Spike was surrendered by his owner because he
moved to a new home and Spike was walking into things. Instead of providing
Spike with a supportive, consistent, and loving environment - he dumped him
at the shelter. Spike seems to like other dogs, but needs slow introductions
since he can't see anything. Spike's former owner reports he has lived
happily with children and with a cat. Please apply today to foster or adopt
Spike. We are in urgent need of foster homes for the boxers currently
waiting for rescue in the shelters.
