Duncan
Duncan introduces himself:

24 hours towards a better life; thanks BDRA  :-)

Please allow me to introduce myself; I am Duncan the Brown Warrior.  Today, September 18, 2009 is the first day of my brand new life.  Let me tell you my story ...

Yesterday at this time I lived with 60 dogs and 20 cats at a Not-So-Humane Society pen where I've been suffering for over a year.  You see I have one perforated eye, one eye where the lens has tilted back in my head, I suffer from Scabies and the Mange, yeast infections in both ears, hookworms and  other health issues.  I am malnourished, weak and tired - but all is so much better.

My friends Phyllis and Pam arranged my release from the hell I lived in and took me to their local vet who gave me a steroid shot to ease the unbearable itching and pills to take the edge of the pain.  I then settled into Big Blue the van for a trip to my new life.

After fine meals and a great night's sleep, this morning I visited Dr. Dee who prescribed a cocktail of medicines to help me improve.  My future includes removal of both eyes yet right now I'm focusing on healing my skin, ears, internals and resting up from the stress I've lived under for so long.

Please do not be bothered by my current situation or by my  pictures below.  Yes I have much to heal yet I am past Rock Bottom.

The same warrior spirit that allowed me to defend myself, to scrounge  enough food to survive, to overcome the buckshot in my eye and all of my pain, that same spirit will now allow me to heal, to grow, to overcome, to thrive and to love.

Duncan Update! 9/27/09

This past week has been a good one for me.  I'm sleeping a lot, eating even more and taking lots of meds.  The humans put the pills in Vienna Sausages and I pretend to not notice yet I take 10 pills a day - antibiotics, pain pills, allergy pills, thyroid pills, plus liquid to kill the worms and parasites, and ear stuff.  Then there is the medicated bath every 3 days ... well, at least I'm cleaner than ever.

New experiences: living indoors (nice!), collar and leash, commands for stairs and to beware, soft bed and carpet, doggie doctors, water and food dish (often filled!), kong ball & treats, lots and lots of loving.

My skin no longer feels like it is on fire - hallelujah - and my ears are clean and without yeast.  Blood tests showed me basically healthy though with a thyroid issue likely brought on by all of my other problems and stress.  The pills will help my skin and allow my hair to return - I'd been wondering if maybe I wasn't part "hairless dog!"

Once healed up it will be time to deal with the big stuff: my eyes and gait issues.  I go back in another week to the doggie doc and will write again then, OK?  Please don't forget me and have a wonderful week.
